Lactation Consultation

What to Expect at a Lactation Consultation

Just because breastfeeding is natural doesn’t mean it always comes naturally. Breastfeeding takes time, and there may be some bumps along the way. There are many reasons why a mom may turn to a lactation consultant. Whether you’re experiencing problems from the get-go or new breastfeeding issues are starting to develop over the coming weeks, our team here at Phoenix Pediatrics offers comprehensive lactation support here in Phoenix and Scottsdale, AZ, to help make the transition and experience of breastfeeding a positive experience for both you and your baby.

There are many instances where you may come in contact with a lactation consultant. You are likely to find one during a prenatal breastfeeding class while you’re still pregnant. Hospitals will usually have lactation consultants to help after your baby is born. Of course, once you bring your baby home from the hospital you may find that you have questions or concerns about breastfeeding. This is when you can turn to our Phoenix medical team for a lactation consultation.

Your First Visit

When you schedule your lactation consultation, we will immediately collect information from you over the phone to better understand your needs and what you are looking to achieve through this appointment. We will also provide you with some details about what to expect during your first visit. We will take time to get to know you during your consultation, asking questions about both you and your newborn’s health. We may also ask you questions about your pregnancy and delivery, as well as questions about your current breastfeeding habits and routines.

We know that this is a sensitive subject and we want every woman that walks through our doors here at Phoenix Pediatrics to feel comfortable and welcome. Rest assured that lactation consultations are conducted in a private setting. Our team is understanding, nurturing, gentle and compassionate. We are empathetic to every mother’s needs and we strive to listen to your specific needs so that we can provide you with a successful and positive experience.

During the Examination

A lactation consultant will examine your breasts and also observe breastfeeding, paying attention to latching, baby’s behaviors and whether your baby is properly sucking and latching. A lactation consultant will provide feedback, advice and tips while also correcting or repositioning your newborn to fix any breastfeeding issues they see. Our team can also provide recommendations for local support groups and answer any additional questions you may have about caring for your newborn.
